Winter 
If you want to venture out into the mountains in winter then you really need to be competent using crampons and an ice axe and recognise when to use them. The best way to gain these skills is to enrol on a winter skills course. Even a 1 day course will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to use an ice axe and crampons for safe winter hiking in the mountains.

In the Lake District, Graham Uney (one of the winter fell top assessors) offers a one day course which comes highly recommended. The course details can be found here :-
